Baby Monkey Private Eye Brian Selznick David Serlin Books

After purchasing this book for myself because I enjoy children’s literature, picture books, and graphic novels, I honestly wasn’t floored by it. I read through it in a couple of minutes and was unsure of what to think. It’s a bit repetitive and simplistic even for an adult that appreciates where this book is coming from. So why five stars? My three year old loves.this.book. I originally anticipated this sitting on the shelf for a couple years before she would appreciate it, but I think 3-7 or so is exactly the right age to enjoy the genius of this book(depending on the child of course.) She is constantly flipping through mommy’s “big books” and now she has a chapter/novel of her own. She is able to “read” this book aloud to herself due to the simplicity, repetition, and beautiful illustrations. Though the subtler references in the office scenes are a bit out of her reach, they are there for her to discover and explore as she grows.

Baby Monkey Private Eye Brian Selznick David Serlin Books Reviews

I gave this book to my 3 1/2-year old daughter, and now she won't read anything else! Thank goodness it's so wonderfully cute. I was a big fan of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and Brian Selznick's illustrations in Baby Monkey do not disappoint. Baby Monkey comes to life, with very little text and a lot of character. The story is simple and repetitive, which plays very well with preschoolers like my daughter, but even I find it a delight to read.

And the pants! My daughter just can't get over the pants, and I can't get over her laughter every time !
A beguiling book with brilliant illustrations. The pictures alone of Baby Monkey trying to put on his pants are perfection. The cases are easy to read and comprehend and contain "secrets" that little ones can search for and adults will smile broadly at. My 6-year nephew reads it constantly although by now he's memorized it i keep looking for a "Baby Monkey" stuffed animal PLEASE!
I purchased this book for my 7 year old grandson since I read all of the reviews praising the book and saying it was great for beginner readers. I clearly have a different definition for a beginning reader. There are 4 - 5 words on an occasional page followed by page after page of pictures. No real story line. Each chapter is a different topic. I would recommend for age 5 and under
This is a fantastic book. Shared it with my five year old granddaughter, who not only loved it but also starting writing her own book, using "Baby Monkey, Private Eye" as a template. Selznick and Serlin have created a masterpiece for beginning readers, but everyone should read this book. It's brilliant! I've read all of Selznick's books and his collaboration with Serlin has brought new life to the genre of easy readers. It's pure joy to read Baby Monkey. I smile every time I see the front cover, and laugh out loud with my granddaughter every time we share an episode from the book.
My 3 year old son rolled with laughter each time Baby Monkey struggled to put pants on. He has asked for this book repeatedly since first reading it. Illustrations are beautifully done and the repetitions are perfect for a 3 year old.
An illustrator's great concept puts the simian tyke in a Sam Spade setting faced with common dilemmas that are solved in careful, clever ways . . . except for that exasperating problem of getting his pants on! I put the book in a room with a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old who dragged their mom out of bed next morning to read it to her twice (!), and their enthusiasm still bubbles. Librarians have said the book is a perfect bridge from children's stories to chapter books. Maybe -- the format makes it so -- but my two guys haven't got past the struggle with the pants yet. There are inside jokes and illustration tricks galore that make it easy for adults accompanying short people's visits to the monkey P.I. office safe for sore eyes.
Don't miss this book! I got this for my 5 year old granddaughter and her 2 ½ year old brother as part of my "airplane survival kit" on our recent vacation trip. It was such a hit? My granddaughter was laughing outlaid and soon, with a combination of sight words and memory could read the book herself. She switched seats so she could read it to her brother and then again to her Daddy and MaMa. Over the week, both kids returned to the book multiple times, sometimes to read to themselves and sometimes to have it read to them. The adults could be seen chortling over the book as well, and enjoyed the fine artistic touches in Baby Monkey's office. This is a masterpiece on so many levels. I have another copy for another granddaughter, but now I see that I'll have to get one for myself.
