2.5 Stars

With the title and blurb, this is what I thought this book would be:

Zombies. Hordes and hordes of ZOMBIES!!!

Instead, this is what I got:

High School. Hordes and hordes of HIGH SCHOOL CRAP.

Don’t get me wrong, this was not a bad book. It just wasn’t what I expected it to be. With a title, blurb, and a prologue that gave me the impression that I was about to witness an epic zombie apocalypse, I had my hopes up for blood, gore, and a kick-a$$ main character. What I got was bloody high school drama that I didn’t really care about.

The Good:

It took awhile to get used to, but I did end up liking the originality of the zombies in this book. It was pretty unique to be reading about soul-eating zombies that could only be seen by certain people, and there was a definite Buffy the Vampire Slayer vs. Resident Evil’s Umbrella Corporation feel that I also found interesting because I’m a big fan of both franchises.

The Bad:

If only this book focused more on the above rather than stupid high school drama. 60% of this book is made up of said drama and it annoyed the hell out of me because when I read a book entitled Alice in Zombieland, I expected, oh I don’t know…ZOMBIES?! What I got was stupid high school politics that again, just annoyed and irritated me especially when I was still reeling from the traumatic way Alice lost her whole family. When the beginning of the book consisted of Alice waking up from an accident to see her whole family’s guts and flesh out in the open with monsters gorging on them, the last thing I cared about was which clique was ruling Alice’s new high school and her insta-love with the resident bad boy, Cole. Your family just had a horrific, brutal death a few months ago and now all you’re obsessing over is a boy’s hot and cold feelings towards you? SERIOUSLY?

The Ugly:

So, yeah, this book was not what I expected and most of the time I welcome that. I thought this would be a book about a zombie apocalypse and it wasn’t, but invisible soul-eating zombies were kind of a fresh idea so I got over it. I thought this would be an Alice in Wonderland tale with a zombie twist but except for a couple of metaphors, there was really not much correlation to the classic, but I got over that too. What I could not get over was Alice’s never-ending “Cole, please WANT ME” monologue that made me want to hit her. Again, your family just died a few months ago which left you almost catatonic over it but that immediately changes because of a hot alpha-h0le bad boy? Of course, there’s an explanation for the insta-love because from their first meeting they had these weird visions together (that except for a few zombie battles, consisted of them making out) so that must mean that Cole’s the love of Alice’s life which naturally trumps everything. Give me a freakin' break. And why were the visions happening in the first place? I don’t think they’re that big of a secret that they just have to be revealed in the second book.

Overall:

If you’re expecting an Alice in Wonderland story with a zombie twist, this book is not it. If you are expecting a zombie apocalypse, this book is not it either. But if you are expecting insta-love with an alpha bad boy, a love triangle, cat fights, and cliques in a high school setting with a bit of a zombie twist that is different from your usual flesh eating fare, then this is the book for you.

Will I read the rest of the series? Probably. But only when I’m in the mood for a YA paranormal romance because this is really what this book is. Not zombies, not Alice in Wonderland, but high school drama in all its angsty glory.

Alice in Zombieland White Rabbit Chronicles Book 1 The White Rabbit Chronicles Gena Showalter Books Reviews

I enjoyed this book and will be purchasing the next one in the series. I will be taking this one book at a time however though. The Zombies in this series are very unique which I applaud. I read numerous zombie books as I do enjoy them, so finding a different approach is refreshing. Being YA does not bother me. I read whatever catches my interest. There were many aspects of this story line so far that is good but as one reviewer commented on and I have agree, a little Twilighty. That is one series I did NOT care for at all. I am willing to give it more time though because there is a lot in it that has a lot of potential. Gena is a very good author. I also understand with the first book in a series there is a lot of ground work to start covering as well.
Love Nana and Pops. Kat is cool. Alice starts to develop, again I have agree with some reviewers about the romance with Alice and Cole. She lost her family and soon after is fixated on Cole. WOW! I know everyone deals with loss differently but that just seemed a little superficial to me. Well that and her caring about other boys wanting to "date" her. Honestly I think that is my biggest problem.
I don't like to put spoilers in my reviews so I am trying to be honest with my review but careful as to not upset others with spoilers.
I can’t remember where I first heard about this book, but from the moment I saw the cover I was in love. It sat on my TBR list for a few months, then I received a sale alert email and it was only 99 cents. You can bet I pounced on that one! The book sat there on my , alone and neglected, for almost 10 months before I finally decided that this would be a good choice to dig into my backlist with and earn some points for Hufflepuff in the Beat the Backlist 2017 challenge.

Let me tell you, this was $1.07 (after tax) well spent.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t in love with the beginning of this book. It was slow to start and felt very info dumpy. Then Kat showed up and the story picked up pace. The narration sort of glossed over Ali dealing with the aftermath of her family’s death, but it was done in a way that worked, so that we weren’t bogged down with her depression before the meat of the story were revealed.

I loved the characters in this book. Kat is absolutely over the top and amazing. She reminds me a little of Janice from Mean Girls. The other girls in her posse were sort of forgettable, their personalities overshadowed by the more important characters. Cole was an utter ass most of the time, but I still found him absolutely charming. I was intrigued by the strange connection he and Ali share. The clues about their connection that are dropped later in the book really make me want to continue this series.

There is definitely a Twilight vibe to this book, but it’s not a bad thing. Unlike Bella who needs someone to save her most of the time, Ali is a totally kick ass chick she doesn’t really need someone to save her, but will accept the help.

I absolutely loved this world that Gena Showalter has created. Zombie’s that can only be seen by a special group of people? Because they’re on the spiritual plane? Um, yes please! This whole world is so unique and creative, I want to know more. And to add a secondary baddie for Ali to have to fight on top of the zombies? Perfection!

I feel the need to add that this isn’t a traditional retelling of Alice in Wonderland. I’m actually not an Alice fan, so this was perfect for me. There were certainly parallels to the classic tale though, so I would still consider this a retelling - though a very loose one.

So, should you read this book? If you’re looking for a YA book featuring a kick ass heroine, a steamy bad boy love interest, a completely new and unique spin on zombies, AND a satisfying ending that still leaves the door open for more books in the series, then YES. This is the book for you.
